Joss Stone headlines ChubMet Festival

ChubMet Music & Art Festival Grand Tour with Joss Stone concert

Country: Cambodia

16 Days | $3,635

Journeys Within Tour Company is excited to have been selected as the official travel partner of the ChubMet Music & Art Festival taking place Feb. 17 – March 2, 2017 in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

This year’s festival features seven unique musical and cultural events, including an intimate performance by the festival’s headliner, Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Joss Stone, performing live at the Jaya House River Park hotel on March 2, 2017.

The ChubMet Music & Art Festival brings together an exciting blend of popular Cambodian and international artists in a celebration of different genres of music and art. And while Joss Stone’s headlining concert on March 2 – part of her Total World Tour mission to play a concert in every UN listed country in the world – will likely draw the most attention internationally, other performances include the opening Kandal Village Carnival, a battle of the bands competition, hip hop and street art, ancient and modern sounds, and more.

For travelers with plenty of time on their hands, the 16-day ChubMet Music & Art Festival Grand Tour (Feb. 16 – March 3) includes highlights of the festival as well as the must-see Giant Puppet Parade along the riverside in Siem Reap on Feb. 18. Tour participants will explore the magical temples of Angkor Wat and the surrounding countryside before traveling to Battambang to be amazed by the incredible Phare Ponleu Selpak Cambodian Circus and the unique shopping opportunities along Battambang’s Pub Street. The Grand Tour also includes stops in Phnom Penh and the beachside resort town of Kep, before returning to Siem Reap for the Joss Stone performance on March 2. Tour packages start at $3,635 per person for the 16-day ChubMet Grand Tour (based on two people traveling together).

Feb. 19   Siem Reap: Backstreet Academy Flute Making – Battambang

This morning you will be taken to Backstreet Academy to learn about Flute Making. The flute has been present in Khmer history since the beginnings of the Angkor empire centuries ago. Played in the high courts and among the villagers, it was an instrument that everyone could connect with. Traditional bands, religious ceremonies and Apsara performances simply could not do without it. Now not only will you get the chance to play one, you will also make your own bamboo flute using traditional methods perfected over centuries! Carefully cut and polish your piece of bamboo and drill precise holes to engineer the most wonderful sounds. You will truly be able to call this instrument your own.

This afternoon you will be met by your guide and driver and transferred by air-conditioned car to Siem Reap. This journey should take about 3 hours. Once in Siem Reap, your guide will take you to your hotel in town. Remember to take a look at our Cheat Sheet which lists a number of our favorite restaurant recommendations!

Feb. 24   Siem Reap: Kulen Mountain Forest Discovery Trail with Modern Cambodian Music Evening

Today you will take a guided hike with Indochine Exploration through the protected Cambodian jungle of Phnom Kulen National Park. Located about an hour and a half north of Siem Reap, Phnom Kulen is home to a community-protected area of mainly intact evergreen and boulder forest. You will leave early in the morning for this forest that surrounds Preah Ang Thom, the largest community on the mountain. As you drive to the village, your guide will talk to you about how this conservation initiative involves local villagers who maintain the trails. By including them in the tour development, locals are provided with an income and therefore an incentive to help stop deforestation and leave the wildlife proper. After arriving and walking through the village, the trail heads into the forest with the canopy high above providing shade even in Cambodia’s hottest months. Hike along the cleared trails, while you keep your eyes open for the wildlife that inhabits the area – in addition to the flying squirrels and birds, rare Silver Langurs were recently discovered in Kulen. After passing over a boulder passageway and through an active bat cave, you will stop for lunch along the banks of the Kulen River before heading back to Preah Ang Thom to visit Cambodia’s largest reclining Buddha, and if you still have energy, take in the beauty of the Kulen Waterfall.

In the evening as part of the ChubMet Music and Art Festival, enjoy a night of traditional Cambodian music with a modern international flavor!
