Topas Ecolodge • Sapa, Vietnam
Topas Ecolodge is a small property located in the heart of the Sapa mountains. The real winner here is the scenery. On a clear day, you will have access to some of the most stunning views in all of Sapa, and a number of the bungalows face east for some spectacular sunrises. That said, this property still has a way to go. The views are very special, whereas the service and overall quality of the property are just not in the same league. That said, this is a great option for those wanting to escape Sapa town and be in a quieter location, as they will also have access to a number of fantastic treks in the area, but being more remote, it does come with its limitations.
The views, without a doubt, and the overall feeling of being more off the beaten track
The property has so much potential but it seems right now the management doesn’t care much for high quality service. If you’re hit with bad weather then you’re destined for a pretty miserable stay. The food is below average and very limited, and you are left wondering in what way this is an ecolodge, as there are no obvious signs of them taking steps to protect the environment. That said, it is unique in comparison to other properties in Sapa and if the skies are clear, you will probably forgive its shortcomings.
Time of year is key when picking this property. If traveling in high season, the temperatures can get really cold and you get a lot of fog and mist. This blocks the views and also makes the rooms damp. The best time really is the summer, as the elevation also brings cooler temperatures. However this does make it tricky when exploring other parts of Vietnam with the higher temperatures…
